are theme songs dead?

so, i was watching lost: season 1 on dvd and i remember thinking that the opening title (just the word "LOST" getting closer to the screen over some ominous chord of music) was very progressive at the time... but now all the new shows are doing just a "title screen" (surface and out of practice being the two most recent that i've noticed...)

what happened to the late and great theme song or theme music??? ... this blog may be a little pre-mature, but i guess i just want to get this out there, before everyone decides to go with the trends. please tv people, take a page out of firefly's book and keep your theme songs! :)

totally random here but you and I have the same blog title! And, although mine didn't start out as a Wicked Reference, it has evolved into one!

Have a great day!

Firefly has a great theme song! I hadn't thought about the loss of the words on television music but you're right. Usually the WB/UPN shows have something but recently they've been already recorded works such as Enterprise and Roswell.

and to add to the list of "no-theme-song-openings":

commander in chief
threshold
invasion
surface
out of practice
