more disney stink-quels
News from Variety on Kronk's New Groove suggests that this follow-up won't land on DVD until January 2006, to more closely coincide with the launch of the Disney Channel series "The Emperor's New School", now in production. Nonetheless, 2005 sees a record level of direct-to-video output from the studio and that trend looks to continue in the years ahead. Besides what's already slated for release in the next twelve months, DisneyToon Studios is said to currently have on its drawing boards the following projects: Cinderella III, The Little Mermaid III, Brother Bear II, The Aristocats II, The Tinker Bell Movie, Mickey in Space, and The Fox and the Hound II. Clearly, there is no end in sight for the divisive but profitable line of animated DTV sequels and spin-offs.

I just can't wait to see "Fox and the Hound II." Let me guess... Tod and Copper both get married and have kids. Their kids initially hate each other (peer pressure from the other kids, that whole Fox/Hound historical differences, etc.) but, through the magic of not-ready-for-primetime musical numbers, lame dialogue, and less frames-per-second than your standard Feature Animation release, they will become friends in the end, learning the value of following your feelings and being friends with animals of all species instead of just fitting in with the crowd. It will be rather touching.... really.... I'm serious... I'm camping out and waiting in line at my local Blockbuster in anxious anticipation... ;)

You know, I really have no problem with that one. Mickey is a serial actor and thus putting out new installments for him works for me. Putting out this garbage about all of Tinkerbell's fairy friends, OTOH, bites royally. Have you read about this cash grab? They are creating a whole new merchandising wing to compliment the Princess, Pooh, Fab Four, and Adventures groups related to Tink and her fairy friends. Sounded like stereotypical lame-o characters as well (the shy one, the bookworm, etc.).

I am about 90% certain it was in one of the last two or three Disney Magazines before that publication went belly-up. I haven't found anything online that refers to anything other than the book and movie, but I will try to find the article and post some quotes. As you noted over on my site, it's possible that they might take this in a nice direction, although I'm fearing a fate similar to Cindy II personally. Hope I'm mistaken...
